Ballarat is well positioned to support the renewable and alternative energy sector.
It is located centrally in a region which is home to more than 60 per cent of operational, proposed or under construction wind energy generators.
Ballarat is also home to the Ballarat Energy Storage System (BESS) at Warrenheip (pictured), the first electricity supply security storage system in Victoria. The BESS was commissioned in late-2018 and is capable of powering 20,000 homes for an hour during peak energy demand, helping to reduce demand on the electricity network during those periods.
Ballarat is actively seeking new and alternative energy generation technology. Our aspiration is to become the first Hydrogen City in Australia, and in late-2018 we went out to market through an EOI process for hydrogen projects to be based in Ballarat. A number of exciting projects were submitted and are now being assessed.
Ballarat has advocated for the development of a waste-to-energy facility at the Ballarat West Employment Zone (BWEZ) for the past five years. Advancement of a waste-to-energy facility will enhance our position as a new energy leader through delivery of a project which focuses on innovation, education, new technology, provision of affordable and secure access to new energy, reduction in carbon emissions, and reducing the environmental impacts of landfill for generations to come.
Also in 2018, Federation University (Ballarat) was granted state government funding to establish the Asia Pacific Renewable Energy Training Centre in Ballarat, with the first intake of students completing training in June 2019. This facility will provide specific technical training to support manufacturing, construction and operation of renewable energy generation. Focusing initially on wind energy generation, it is expected to be expanded to be able to future-proof the industry in the region.
Due to the sheer volume of renewable and alternative energy projects in the region, there are significant opportunities across the sector - from construction through to ongoing operation and maintenance.
