Ballarat is an active city, boasting more than 100 recreation and sporting facilities, including a number of major stadiums, pavilions, fields, pools, courts and community venues.
One of our biggest stadiums, Mars Stadium, is the regional home of the Western Bulldogs and is a regular venue on the AFL fixture.
The Ballarat Sports and Events Centre (BSEC), which is currently undergoing major redevelopment works, is also expected to bring in elite teams across a number of sporting fields. The facility will include six new indoor basketball courts and a show court with capacity for 3,000 spectators.
There are 18 major parks including the popular Ballarat Botanical Gardens, 149 neighbourhood parks, in excess of 50km of tracks and trails including the southern section of the Goldfields Track, more than 2,000ha of open space, and three major lakes including the iconic Lake Wendouree.
There are several exceptional golf courses, two of which are now considered championship courses. Creswick, a township in the neighbouring Hepburn Shire, hosts a Robert Allenby-designed course at the RACV Goldfields Resort, while a Peter Thompson-designed course is located at the Ballarat Golf Club.
Cyclists are also well catered for with many significant national cycling and community events, including the annual Cycling Australia Road National Championships and the Ballarat Cycle Classic. These major events, which are based around Ballarat and Buninyong, have brought international recognition to our community.
Local sporting associations across Ballarat cater for junior, senior and masters’ competitions for people of all ages and abilities.
